There is a popular joke about the Italians, that is, to stop an Italian talking just block his/her hands. How do you understand this joke from a cultural aspect?

Italians usually talk with a lot of body language. Body language is an integral part of Italian culture. If we block their hands, they will feel limited in speaking, unable to express their own meaning, and others will not understand their meaning and feelings. This is because gestures are very important in their daily communication.

Italians get used to express themselves by all kinds of gestures, which is an important culture habit of them. In Italy, different gestures even represent different meanings, just like the third mouth of Italians. In my opinion, they use gestures when talking not only to emphasize and express their feelings, but also to make others understand their ideas better. It is also a reflection of their hospitable character. So the gestures are very important in Italians' talkings and if you block their hands in talking , it may make them feel uncomfortable and stop talking.

In my opinion, it is probably related to one of their cultural key concepts and values---Affective Communication. An important aspect of Italian culture is the openly expreesed thoughts and feelings common to most Italians. Emotions tend to flow easily in this culture with large hand gestures.

Italians usually use a variety of gestures or body language to express their emotions as they are speaking. Their hands will move in the air, and the gestures they make convey a variety of meanings. Body language is almost a part of expression for them. So it's often said that blocking their hands can stop them talking.

Italians are very passionate people, emotions are so powerful that individuals can't keep them inside and must express them to others, especially with the use of body language.  So if we block his/her hands, that means they can't express their emotions to any other people.

Rich intonation, various gestures and warm human feelings are the most real portraits of Italy. Italians, from children to adults, are particularly fond of using gestures when communicating.So if blocking an Italian hand,he/she will probably don't know how to talk because they lose their gestures to help expressing what they mean.

This should be because the French like to use body language to express meaning when speaking, especially through gestures. From this point, we can see that French culture is very open, because they like to use body language very much, not as implicit as many conservative countries.

When Italians speak, they must match gestures, because only then can they better convey the meaning and emotion they want to express.  When it comes to "gestures", one cannot but mention the most classic one: put five fingers together and swing back and forth while talking.  According to the different context, it represents different meanings:
Why?  !  What happened?  What do you want?  My god!  This is delicious!
This is only the basic paragraph. It should be noted that in daily life, there are as many as 250 gestures expressing different meanings-the rich communication gestures of Italians, which are not only their unique secret language, but also inherit the historical significance and unique culture for centuries.

Because Italians are used to using their body languages like hands、fingers.By looking their rich body languages and gestures, you can understand that these can express something that words and phrases don't express the meaning. There is a very interesting thing in Italia, people don't speak if they don't use gestures.A survey about this in Italia is that the times of doing gestures is as much as the times of speaking words.
