Discussion 1:

Do you know anything about “Shanghai Import Expo”? And why does China hold such an Import Expo rather than an Export Expo?

International trade is closely related not only to economics, but also to politics, history and culture of a given country. It is necessary to do some research and put all these factors into consideration to have a better understanding of a country’s trade policy. Now there are few points worth considering if we want to get know the reasons:

  1. Balance of trade: Most countries would like to achieve a favorable balance where they would like their exports exceed their imports.
  2. “The Belt and Road” initiative: This initiative wants to invite all the poorer developing countries, such as those in Asia and Africa to participate in world trade. OBOR is a Chinese solution of oriental wisdom designed to pursue common prosperity and development. China opens its market to them, imports merchandize from them and builds roads and railways there to improve their infrastructure facility and communication.
  3. The ancient Silk Road and Zhen He’s Expedition: The ancient Silk Road is a great treasure of history not only for China and for the whole world. Also think about Zhen He’s expedition. From 1405 to 1433, Zhen he set his voyage travelling seven times to Southeast Asia and across the Indian Ocean. He travelled as far as the most southern place of Africa. What Zhen He brought to these countries are friendly exchange of commodities, communication between cultures and good will and peace. Through these Silk Road and Expedition, China never sought to create any military presence there and set up colonies.
  4. The Origin of the western globalization: Columbus and his crew set out from Europe in 1492 and discovered the New World. In the same year, Spain gave Christopher Columbus his commission of exploration. According to some experts, 1492 saw the first period of globalization which lasted until the early 1800s. During this period, Spanish pirates began to bring gold, silver, and other treasures from the New World back to Spain. Britain colonized India, Portugal and East Asia.
