After reading three research papers in communication engineering, I summarize two syntactic features. First, academic writing prefers impersonal constructions. It rarely uses first-person pronouns such as “I” or “we”. Instead, writers describe phenomena and experiments directly to keep objectivity. Second, complex sentences with embedded clauses are common. These sentences combine definitions, experimental conditions and results together, which can accurately describe technical details without choppy short sentences.

Long nominal phrases instead of verbs (nominalization).Writers prefer noun-based phrases like "the implementation of the algorithm", "an improvement in accuracy", "for the optimization of the network", rather than verb forms like "to implement", "to improve". Packing information into noun groups makes sentences compact and information-dense, which raises the lexical density typical of academic texts.
