There are striking differences in table manners between China and the UK or the US.

Firstly, the dining style is distinct. Chinese meals are typically communal: dishes are placed in the middle of the table, and people share food with chopsticks, which strengthens the bond between diners. In comparison, British and American dinners focus on individual portions. Everyone has their own separate plate, and they eat with knives and forks.

Secondly, acceptable table noises differ greatly. In China, slurping noodles or soup is seen as praise for the food, showing you enjoy the meal a lot. However, in the UK and US, eating noisily or talking with a full mouth is very rude. People are expected to eat quietly and not disturb others.

Lastly, Chinese table etiquette pays much attention to seniority and toasting order, while Western table rules are more relaxed and equal.

These differences come from different cultural backgrounds, and we should respect and understand each other’s dining customs.

China and Western countries like the UK and the US have big differences in table manners.

In China, people share dishes together at the table and use chopsticks. Slurping food is a nice compliment to the chef. Also, we value proper seating and toasting order based on respect for elders.

In the UK and the US, people eat their own individual food with knives and forks. They must eat quietly, keep their mouths closed while chewing, and never make loud noises at the table.

All these manners are shaped by our own cultures, and it is important to respect different dining traditions.
