The Relationship Between Comprehension and Expression in Translation

Comprehension and expression are the two core, inseparable stages of translation—neither can stand alone, and one is the absolute prerequisite of the other.

    Their Relationship

    1. Comprehension is the foundation and premise
Comprehension means accurately grasping the original text’s literal meaning, logical structure, emotional tone, cultural connotation, and intended message. Without correct comprehension, expression becomes meaningless or even misleading: it may result in mistranslation, misinterpretation, or distortion of the author’s ideas, no matter how fluent the target language sounds.
    2. Expression is the goal and presentation
Expression refers to converting the accurately understood meaning into natural, accurate, and idiomatic language in the target language. Even with perfect comprehension, poor expression—such as rigid wording, awkward syntax, or inconsistent style—will fail to convey the original information effectively and make the translation unreadable.
    3. They interact and restrict each other
Deep comprehension often inspires better expression; meanwhile, difficulties in expression may force the translator to re-examine and refine comprehension. The translation process is a cycle of understanding → expressing → rechecking understanding → optimizing expression.

    Which Is More Important?

    Comprehension is fundamentally more important.

    - Accuracy always comes first in translation. A wrong understanding leads to an invalid translation, no matter how beautifully it is written.
    - Expression can be polished and improved through revision, but incorrect comprehension is a fatal error that cannot be fixed by rhetoric.
    - Only when the original meaning is fully and correctly grasped can expression achieve faithfulness, fluency, and elegance.

In short: comprehension determines the correctness of translation, while expression determines its quality. Without correct comprehension, excellent expression is just elaborate decoration on a wrong foundation.
