In the process of translation, comprehension and expression are two interdependent and closely connected stages: comprehension is the foundation and prerequisite for expression—without accurate understanding, expression has no solid basis; expression is the realization and completion of comprehension, and the depth of understanding is ultimately reflected in the quality of the translated text. If we must compare which stage is more important, comprehension is the more decisive first step, because the fundamental goal of translation is to convey information—misunderstanding leads to complete failure, no matter how elegant the expression, as it only communicates the wrong message. Expression, on the other hand, builds upon accurate comprehension and determines whether the translation moves from being "acceptable" to "excellent." While both are indispensable, comprehension is fundamentally important, while expression is elevational.
