In Emily Dickinson’s Because I could not stop for Death, how does the personification of Death challenge the traditional view of mortality?

Dickinson personifies Death not as a terrifying skeleton or a violent reaper, but as a polite gentleman who “kindly stopped” for her. This challenges the traditional view of mortality as something brutal and fearful. Instead of a sudden snatching away, Death becomes a patient carriage driver, moving slowly past a school, fields of grain, and the setting sun. The journey ends not in total annihilation but in a “House” — a grave — that leads toward “Eternity.” To a science student, this feels like changing the model of death from a destructive collision to a gentle phase transition: the person doesn’t vanish, but shifts into a different state, with time slowing down, almost like approaching an event horizon.
