In Christopher Marlowe's poem "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love," the shepherd invites his beloved with a series of lavish, naturalistic gifts (such as beds of roses, a gown of the finest wool, and a cap of flowers), promising a life of eternal spring and pleasure. However, when we consider this poem against the backdrop of Marlowe's own controversial and even violent life—described as a spy, an atheist, who met an early death in a tavern brawl—does this fervent celebration of an idyllic, innocent love reveal a deep personal yearning for an idealized, unattainable order? Or, should it instead be interpreted as an ironic revelation of the inherent illusion and emptiness of such pastoral promises?
