Spiced rolls: a roll full of love

Though I felt attached to the fantastic pizzeria, we said goodbye to it and had an unforgettable time in Naples. At the time I was searching for information on the Internet for a next stop; a Chinese friend just texted me that she expected me to taste the flavor in a kind of traditional Chinese cuisine, which is located in Zhangzhou, Fujian, China.
With excitement and curiosity, Sofie and I have come to China. As soon as we stepped out of the taxi, the noisy voices suddenly wrapped around us. Introduced by our Chinese friend, it was time for dinner, so the vegetable market would be hotter than any time. We followed the direction of her finger, what we could see were just crowds of people gathering together at a corner. “Here we go.” Led by the friend, we began to lift the veil of the traditional Chinese cuisine.
There is a small street stall with the ingredients and food laid neatly on a platform, next to a frying-pot. It’s too tiny that numerous people getting together makes the stall unclear. But the inviting aroma of this street food likes a pair of invisible opening-hands, blocking the passersby's ways and letting them stay. (indirect description)
We eagerly wanted to know what it is, and the Chinese friend translated the name of it to us, which is called Spiced rolls. Unlike anything I have met before, with the goldish-brown color, the tube-shaped food is full inside and makes your mouth water. The stallholder grabbed the pork cut up already in a basin; added the cooking wine and spoons of salt. Next, he sprinkled down the soul of Spiced rolls——five-spice powder, which typically includes star anise, cloves, fennel seeds, cinnamon and cumin. Sometimes the powder also contains Sichuan pepper. With the key powder unlocking the door of taste buds, a paradise of flavor will open in a while. Then we watched the stallholder mix all in the basin sufficiently to ready for the following steps. Afterwards he finely chopped the scallions and garlic; the white radish is quickly cut into shreds, too. After adding a little starch, all ingredients got together and been fully mixed; they would be finally placed on the soft tofu skin. Then the stallholder folded them into tube-shaped. The most exciting moment is coming when the rolls fall into the cooking oil-pot. The tofu skin was stimulated, sizzling a loud and engaging symphony. Seeing the rolls swimming in the cooking oil ocean, do not forget to pull them out. The moment you remove them from the pot determines the flavor of Spiced rolls. Only grabbing the moment that rolls shine goldenly can maintain the best condition of them. (different senses)
Finally came the time we took a bite from Spiced rolls. I love it so much! The incredible flavor makes me almost jump up. The whole world seems to be quiet at the moment, and what flows in my mind is only the satisfaction that Spiced rolls bring for me. Meanwhile, Sofie is widening her eyes, mumbling surprisingly with mouth stuffed by the rolls, “We should have been here a long time ago.” Each bite includes the crispy tofu skin and velvety full stuffing. Shredded white radish owns its special refreshing taste mixed in rolls. All ingredients are having a big party in your mouth, which makes you lose your mind easily and lingers an endless aftertaste. Compared with the Mexico meat rolls I tasted before, the yummy Spiced rolls are totally different, capturing my heart with no effort.
Recovering from the happiness of tasting the flavor, I realized that the sky had already been dark for a while. But the crowd of people wasn't separated at all. Our Chinese friend told us that Spiced rolls is a kind of traditional cuisine in Zhangzhou, standing for the profound cultural significance. When the Spring Festival comes around, the dish must show up, representing the precious reunion. Also, the form of its flavor is witness to the progressive formation of Min culture. On one hand, the unique taste of Spiced rolls, carries warm emotions shared by millions of families. As long as a person travelling far away comes back to his or her hometown in Zhangzhou, this conventional cuisine will always evoke the deep love inside the heart and rebuilt the firm connection. On the other hand, once a friend in the distance arrives to visit, the specialty will be provided to welcome and strengthen the friendship.
