Doctrine of the Mean

By 2022级10班高欣宇 09-21 37次浏览

"潜龙勿用" is a phrase from the I Ching (Book of Changes), which translates to "the hidden dragon should not be used" or "the dragon hidden in the deep should not be active." It suggests that a person of talent and virtue is not yet the time to act or be utilized. In a broader sense, it implies that one should bide their time and wait for the right moment to act, especially when one is not yet recognized or in a position to exert influence.

"九三:君子终日乾乾;夕惕若,厉无咎" can be translated as "Nine three: The superior man is vigilant all day long, and if at night he still remains watchful as if facing danger, there will be no mistake."

These translations are based on the interpretations found in various sources, including classical translations of the I Ching.

The first paragraph of the article mentions the concept that Chinese people have always adhered to: that one's social status and position in life are in a state of perpetual flux, and maintaining a down-to-earth approach means constantly adapting to changes in time and place. One should remain centered, follow the middle path, or practice moderation, because failing to do so can lead to an unexpected transfer of one extreme to the other when the yin form reaches its limit, resulting in unforeseen outcomes. I believe that the above two sentences are an embodiment of the Chinese insistence on the harmony of yin and yang, and the Doctrine of the Mean. Whether it is the extremely weak period of the hidden dragon or the extremely prosperous period of the superior man who remains vigilant all day, one should not excessively flaunt. Both reflect the harmony of yin and yang and the Doctrine of the Mean. The hidden dragon in the abyss cultivates its energy and continuously grows stronger from a position of extreme weakness, enhancing itself. However, even in times of strength, one must know how to conceal one's edge to avoid being targeted as the first to be eliminated. They both represent extreme states that are not conducive to harmonious and stable development.
